What Will Cause Someone to Fall Overboard

Fall Overboard / Friday, January 22nd, 2021

Boaters need to be conscientious about the possibility of falling overboard while they’re on the water. They also need to keep an eye out for any guests on their vessel who are not experienced boaters and may be unaware of the danger. Here are some of the most common causes of falling overboard.

Slippery Surfaces

It’s reasonable to expect that the deck of a vessel can become wet and slippery. A slippery surface can cause someone to fall overboard. Boaters should take reasonable care when walking on their vessels, attempt to dry wet surfaces when possible, and wear non-skid footwear.

Sudden motions from waves or turns can be disorienting. The person steering a boat should alert everyone onboard when there is chop ahead.

It’s relatively common now for people to fall while walking because they are distracted by their phones. The same is true on a boat. Boat owners and their passengers need to pay attention to their bearings rather than their phones.

Overindulgence in alcohol can significantly impair people’s balance. Moderating alcohol consumption is a must for boat operators, but it is also prudent for passengers to limit their alcohol intake as well.

Ultimately, boaters cannot be dismissive about the possibility of falling overboard. They must conduct themselves responsibly and convey caution to their passengers.
